Little Red School House

I can't believe this is my last entry to Art Journal Journey this month. Usually September is a long month but this year it absolutely flew.
Thanks Elizabeth for this great back to school theme.
However this week has NOT flown by.  Its been way too long, and it isn't over yet. Instead of just focusing on the hubby's surgery-that was suppose to happen-I am dealing with a very busy week at school. Oh my.
And the chilly weather we have now makes it feel more like October. Just giving us a taste I guess. It is nice to pull out the sweaters and fall clothes. :)  I always feel like I have a new wardrobe when you pull out those clothes you haven't worn in 6 or 7 months.
So this journal page I made this little red school house. Here in New England red school houses are quite popular. I was curious why, so I looked it up and I found out that back in the 1800's a cheap paint could be made with iron oxide. Not only did it color the buildings red, it also was a great wood preservative.  So I painted up this one room red school house, and added the class too.
I even added the school bell that could ring when it was time for class to begin.
And to celebrate Friday- yahoo- I am ready for it- I am linking up to Paint Party Friday. Thank you again Eva and Kristen for Hosting.

Another short post today. My school bell will be ringing this morning before I know it.
Thanks for stopping by.

Love your page with the school house. I can imagine your week was not as you had planned, so wish you strength to get through it till weekend comes. I know that feeling about enjoying putting warm clothes on again, it's fun, and almost like new stuff, that's true! Have a good day, hugs, Valerie

I learned something new today. Red oxide! I knew lots of barns in "your neck of the woods" were painted red, but I had no idea why. Your red school house is fantastic, and your painting it is wonderful. A truly lovely mixed media entry today, dear friend.

You asked about my Ph.D. It's in Human Factors, a combination of engineering and psychology, taught out of both departments.

Very interesting about the red school houses.
Yours looks great Erika with the group photo! A perfect finale for another creative month for you. I only got to join in Elizabeth's cool challenge a handful of times with lots of ideas still swirling.
I'm with you on enjoying fall clothes which are more my style than summer.
Happy Friday to ya oxo

I like how small the group of children look in front of that impressive red building. How interesting that most of your schools were red and the reason for this. I sure would prefer going to a red-painted school than just a plan brick one :-)

Wonderful page, it looks like a very inviting school, painted all bright and red. Cheap and a good preservative - that sounds like a good deal! And it looks good too. It still feels more like summer than autumn here, I can't wait to get my warmer clothes out. Hope October will be less busy for you!

This is a lovely red house school. I can just hear the bell pealing.
Very sorry to hear that your husband's surgery didn't happen. I was thinking of you both.
I'm always in awe as to how you manage to find the time to make so much creative original artwork.

I love your red school house and the class :-). I've seen red buildings in New England when I have visited - schools and barns too! It's nice to know the reason they are red so thanks very much for sharing this :-). I really like the change of seasons and getting a new wardrobe of clothes too. Wishing you a lovely relaxing weekend! J :-)

What a great painting to end the Challenge. Great schoolhouse and thank you for sharing that information. I grew up in Ohio and all the barns were red. I would imagine it was for the same reason. It's always cool to find out how color was created centuries ago. Hope all is well with your husband and that he is on the mend and won't need surgery. Happy PPF and have a Wonderful Week! Big hugs, Rasz

Your red school house is absolutely lovely. It is an interesting fact as to why red was used. Early part of September was hot and suddenly it is sweater weather.

This photo and your art reminds me of the one room schoolhouse my dad went to. It was probably red, too. I love the brightness of the school with the black and white image. Very nice indeed. I never knew the part about the paint preservative.

Love the colour and style of your fabulous school house, and interesting to learn the reason for the colour. The red also makes it feel very inviting and look a happy place.
Love the new blog header too.
