It's Friday-Boating Day

Hi everyone. Happy Friday once again. I wrote this post yesterday (Thursday), and it suposed to be cooler today (Friday). I hope so as the last 3 days have been oppressive.

I'm back today with some photos to link up to Nicole's  Friday Face Off  and also to Gillena's  Friday Lunch Break.

Last Friday we finally went for our first trip out on the water in my husband's boat. Usually we're out by mid-June, but this year between rainy weekends and other things, we ended up behind schedule. I'll be glad next year when my husband is semi-retired so he can have more time to get the boat cleaned up and hopefully I won't have to listen to him complain about how his boat is so sad to still be sitting in the backyard. 😏 Grin.

To get out to the ocean we have to travel 6 miles down a tidal river. On our trip down river we pass the Portsmouth Naval Ship Yard where they do a lot of work on submarines. I'm always drawn to the number of cranes they have . Here's a few views from a few different spots.

I counted close to 30 cranes around the entire ship yard. These photos are just a small fragment of the area.

It was also a day for flocks of birds. First here's lots of seagulls.

And out in Little Harbor we encountered lots of terns. The fishing must have been good for them.

I really enjoy watching the terns dive bomb into the water to catch fish, but I never get any good photos of that. But I do try.

Last Friday was a gorgeous day on the water. It was partially sunny, not too hot, and the water was fairly calm. Because the weather wasn't too hot nor the seas too rough, we brought the dogs with us.  They enjoy a little boat ride too.

Here's a couple of faces for Friday Face off. My  husband was fishing, and Miss Maddie, even though she is blind, went right for her seat when I took her off the leash.

When I had Maddie leashed Pete decided he'd try to make it his seat.

But Maddie said that wasn't happening. Ha ha.

Other than catching some mackerel (the mackerel fishing was great), there wasn't much else biting.

This photo doesn't show the blue tone on the fish, but I think mackerel have the prettiest coloring. Look at those "stripes".  They're like tigers, even if they are small and don't have really sharp teeth or claws.

These guys were in the wet well which keeps them alive, and at the end of the trip they all went back into the ocean. I would have taken a few big ones home to eat, but we didn't have any ice to transport them. Oh well. Better they get to swim some more in the ocean than fill my tunmy.

It was a nice day on the water, and I hope you enjoyed my few photos. Have a super Friday and start to your weekend.

  12. I never had mackerel until we came to Ireland. I particularly like smoked mackerel. Your husband looks pretty content there on the boat with his fishing pole :-)

  17. It's interesting to see the harbor on the lake and the many terns. We're seeing more black-headed gulls and herring gulls in flocks at the moment. Your two dogs on the boat are sweet, and your fisherman (husband) will be happy to retire next year. I'd also love to have one of those mackerel. Yes, they look beautiful with that pattern.
I hope you have a happy weekend.Hugs Elke

  20. Thje first photo of the cranes looks like a crown. It soon changes as more cranes come into view.
Love the photo of `Miss Maddie claiming her chair, she looks really at home on the boat.
I like mackerel but hubby not so so I don't eat it that often, only when out.
