T Stands for Pop's

Hi everyone. Happy new week. It's also time for T again over at  Bleubeard's and Elizabeth's blog   so hello to everyone who joins us with their drink related photo(s).

Since my post is about Pop's today I must warn you there are some food photos which may or may not be appealing to you. 😏

Those of you who have been visiting my blog on T day for a while know that in the summer I like to go and eat at a little hole in the wall place called Pop's Clam Shell.  This vintage restaurant is only open from May and into early September and is about a 10 minute drive (if there's no traffic) from my house.

I knew Pop's had been around  since right after the Second World War since it opened in 1945 (and it looks like it too ❤), but I recently learned that it  has been owned and operated  by the same family the whole time too. I want to know what their secret is for making fried food because it isn't particularly greasy, isn't overly coated in batter, and I never get that after dinner taste in my mouth either. 🫢

We've taken a few trips there this year because we like to enjoy it while we can. Early and late in the season Pop's is only open on weekends because many of their staffers are high school students. Once school is out they are open every day for lunch and dinner except Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  But since they are a small operation, those hours can change on a dime. (As I believe CJ learned last summer. 😩)

The first couple of times we went it was a little chilly  so my husband and I split their fisherman's platter. This next photo isn't a very good view of the meal, but you can see the drink I brought with me. We bring our own drinks because one thing we think is overpriced at Pop's are their sodas.

However, their fisherman's platters haven't gone up in price for the last several years, and we get so much food we split one meal and still have leftovers to bring home. In this photo we switched out the usual French fries for  onion rings, and also buried in that plate is a cole slaw, as well as fried fish, shrimp, clams and scallops.

Then we went on a Sunday evening for dinner another time, and they must have had a busy weekend because when I went to order a lobster roll, they were out of lobster. My husband  really likes their chicken fingers and they were out of those too. 😒  And they were out of scallops too. Good thing I am a fried clam lover because they had plenty of those. The hubby settled for haddock nuggets which is also one of his favorite meals.

But finally we went a couple of weeks ago on a rainy Saturday for a late lunch, and they had both the chicken and lobster. (Although that day my husband decided to go for a fish sandwich instead.)

I was glad to see the price of their lobster rolls had not gone up at all, and although they are not a bargain, you certainly get your money's worth. This time I had my lobster with butter instead of mayo (I like them both ways) because it was a chillier wet day and the buttered lobster is a little warmer than the mayo style.

If you ever get to Pop's, they only take cash. They do have seating in a small separate building. You can either sit in the roof area which is outdoor seating or you can sit inside. The town of Alton, where they are located, also has lots of picnic tables around the area.

I hope I didn't make anyone hungry (grin) and that you have a super T day and week ahead.

Pop’s does look like a very special and enjoyable experience. Especially the lobster — when they have it.

I love that you get your money worth and that's the best thing. I don't actually mind paying for good stuff, it's when we don't get our money worth that I don't enjoy and stop going there.

I would love to try the lobster roll with butter because I am allergic to mayonnaise. It looks delicious and so glad they let you bring your own drinks. too. Thanks for sharing your experiences at Pops, along with your Coke, for T this week dear Erika.

Teague and I were there the last week of August just before Labor Day. Closed the Thursday we went because school had started! We ended up having lunch at Shibley's across the street. All the meals looks and sound great. Maybe someday I'll get to find out how good everything is. Happy T Day

Interesting with the soda. From Australia I know so-called "BYO"-places, but that´s for beer and wine. They don´t need to pay for an alcohol license, you bring your own.
In Germany I think they´d threw you out if you brought your own drink and be it but soda.
I´m a bit "jealous"... My Mom came from the coast and was a seafood-lover, as is Ingo. My Dad... not and I have his genes. But, surprise: For today I planned a fish-patty from the air fryer! For some reason I like that (but who knows how much fish is really in there, I will better not check the list ;-)...)
Have a super T-Day, hugs

They look very tasty and not too greasy!!
It's impressive that the same family has had it for so many years. This is something difficult and well done to them!

Bring your own drink? That wouldn't work here. The drinks are what they make their money on so not many restaurants allow it. Those that do charge a 'corkage' fee, which is usually in cafe's that don't have a licence to sell alcohol. They can't sell wine or beer but they earn some money through the corkage as they would otherwise lose out on soft drinks.
The food at Pop's really looks lovely. I know you love your lobster roll and my mouth always waters when you write about it. It's really nice that you dedicated a whole blogpost to Pop's.
I'm glad you like my new lamp. I don't quite know what to do with the old one yet. Believe me, if you lived any closer I'd give it to you, but the shipping will probably be prohibitive.
Happy T-Day,
Lisca

Well, we aren't so different. That platter looks amazingly identical to what we get at a wonderful place, also about 10 minutes away from me, called The Monument Inn. In the shadow of the San Jacinto Monument, where Sam Houston defeated Santa Anna to win Texas' independence. Their fried food is also not too greasy and has that marvelous self-rising flour crust batter too (with maybe a tad of cornmeal added in and my guess is cornstarch to make the batter stick). Plus they serve these delicious yeast rolls and cinnamon rolls when you first sit down that are to die for.

Hungry??? Yes, and very very envious!!! I could just eat one of those lobster rolls. Lobster is so over priced her in the UK and I have never seen a lobster roll on a menu anywhere but the look of it on your blog pages (yes, i have envy from past posts too) makes me want to turn back the clock to a few years ago when I used to visit my friend in America. We went to seafood places but I never heard of a lobster roll but I am sure they served them.
Oh, it looks so good and not at all greasy. The whole platter in the first visit on here looks delicious.
I love seafood.
Hugs, Neet xx
