Hi everyone. Happy mid-week. It's chilly, grey and rainy in the forecast in my area today, and supposed to be pretty wet for the next couple of days too. Well we could use the rain, although you will see later in this post, why I wish it had been sunny today. ๐
It's been very exciting around my house this Wednesday (or this past Wednesday, depending when you read this) morning. It was only 10 AM as I started to write this. My day started last night about 3 AM when Pete was barking. It was not a very aggressive bark, so I lay listening to him and thought it was only a deer, raccoon, opossum or maybe even an owl in the back yard. Then he went off for a drink of water, and when he came back, his bark became extremely aggressive and if he barked at you like that, you'd be cowing and backing away slowly. It was one of those barks that makes people afraid of dogs.
OK, time to get up, and when I did, I got half way down the stairs, and right outside the sliding back door on the deck, was a big old black bear. There was just the door glass between him and Pete. And he didn't seem very worried about Pete.
He did react to me though, especially when I flipped on the back light. He turned around and trundled off the deck, not in too much hurry. He was up there because even though I wasn't sure this was the best place, I've been putting my bird feeders into the screen porch (only the door is opened at this point because of our cold spring) at night just because of these possible bear visits.
Luckily I was there when I was because he probably would have ripped off the screen door and had a seat in the screen porch to eat his 3 AM snack if I'd ignored the situation much longer.
And luckily I thought to grab my phone, so I even got a few photos of him as he trundled off across the back yard.
The "funny" part of all this was Miss Maddie. Remember she is blind. She also sleeps in bed with my husband and myself, and our room is on the second floor. I'm downstairs with Pete and the bear, and she wants to be so she hops off the bed. I hear my husband keep repeating "Wait for me before you go down the stairs." but no, she comes running down the stairs like she was a puppy and could see. Then she starts her aggressive barks, which I think the bear finds much scarier than Pete's because that's when he speeded up his movement a bit.
In this next photo, if you look at George the bigfoot and then look slightly to the right, you might be able to make out Mr. Bear standing and waiting for the lights to go out. He's cutting off the bottom of the 2 trees and kind of looks like a black rock in the photo. Bears are smart, and they will wait and hope you go away so they can come back again.
That means I waited up a bit for him to finally lumber off into the woods.
You can also see the bird feeder pole in this last photo which was how it looked at 3:30 AM. The only 2 feeders I didn't bring in the previous evening were the humming bird feeder, which was now empty and the oriole jelly feeder, which was also empty. But I didn't lose either of those.
But the pole was cracked almost all the way through so when I tried to straighten it out this morning, it broke. Luckily it's one of those feeders that comes in pieces that clip together so I think I only have to buy the bottom pole part. As some of you have read before, this seems to happen once every year or two.
My next big worry was the bee hive which has a lot of honey in it. Luckily this bruin seems to understand the electric fence, so that was just fine. Phew! ๐Good thing because this morning at 7 AM the post office called me to tell me my next batch of bees had arrived. I didn't need to deal with a wrecked hive and start a new hive before the rain started.
I was totally shocked there were so few dead bees on the bottom because this package shipped last Thursday and took almost a week to get to my local post office.
The bees had to be put in because they can't live in the box for a long time (which with shipping their time in the box was already pushing it), so luckily the rain held off long enough for me to get them put in this morning.

The can contains bee food to tie them over until they get into the hive.
Once the can is removed, I can get most of the bees out. There's always a few that want to wait and go out on their own later.
Once the box was mostly empty, I added some food into the hive. That food will hold them over until they can make enough from their foraging. Then the top went back on the hive.
I pushed the almost bee-free shipping box up as much as I could so it would be under the hive entrance. Then I put a tarp on the top of the hive just because these bees haven't had a chance to make the inside of the hive all toasty warm yet. With the 3 days of rain coming, it hopefully will hold in whatever heat there is.
And now as I finish writing this at around 11:00 AM, I'm wondering if I've already done enough for the day. Maybe I can justify a lazy rainy day reading on the couch. Ha ha. ๐

We never get bears in our backyards here in Europe. But I doubt we're not aware of how inquisitive and potentially destructive North American black bears can be. If one did turn up in my backyard, I would be very worried, if only for the garden itself.
Goodness me what a day and as you say it's only 11.00am as you write this post!!!
You definitely deserve time spent lazily reading on the couch.
Take care, bears and bees ... whatever next?!
All the best Jan
A lazy day on the couch reading is definitely what you deserve!!! Wow, bears and bees, what a great post! We had a warning a couple of years back that there was a bear moving through our neighborhood and a lot of bird feeders were looking like yours. Nothing since though. Thanks for sharing Erika.
YIKES! He was a big bugger too! And good thing you've got an electric fence protection your bee hives!
Bears and bees. I would have to travel into the mountains here to maybe see a bear or other wildlife. The only wildlife I might see around here is a pigeon. lol
Gosh...how could that be!! Imagine having a bear visit your backyard...never in my life would I think it's possible. That's the animal belongs to wild or zoo...
Gosh Erika, that bear , what an animal to have walking so close to your home, its bad enough for us having the the local fox prowling and maybe a deer in the woodland close by, I don't think I could cope with bears. Hope your bees are settling in, its been good seeing all your latest photos. Have a good week.
You do have your challenges with a bear in the backyard, Erika. On one level it is wonderfully interesting to have these animals so close, but they can cause a huge amount of damage as you well know. I shall feel quite abashed the next time I complain about a raccoon on my bird feeders! All the best - David
How exciting to see a forest puppy in your yard! Good thing the dogs and you manning the light were able to help him go back to the woods. That would have been scary to find him in the sun porch. Sorry he destroyed the birdfeeder pole. That's exciting about the new bees and you getting them all snug in their new home. Yes, you can call it a day. Rainy day for us with some heavy downpour predicted. Stay dry
...Erika, your post just appeared on my readers list, Blogger isn't getting any better! The bear is a bit too close for me!!!
Woah, what a "morning"!!! The "worst" that could hit here would be a cat or a squirrel.
Hope the bees are all good as in happy in their new home? Hugs from here. The cold part of Germany, brrr......
Good grief! Now THAT's a day. AND a night! Well, good for the dogs and especially Miss Maddie! I'm glad he didn't make it to the porch. Or to the bees. I can see why that would be a huge concern and actually, that was the first thing I thought of. Three cheers on the new arrivals. I hope they settle in quickly and that the tarp holds in the rain. It's supposed to be warming up here so maybe it's coming east! You have a fascinating life, my friend. Wow. Very fascinating!
Dear Erika, you really do have some exciting garden visitors! Our most exciting ones are a pheasant and, in winter, a common buzzard... But to be honest, I'm not exactly keen on a visit from a bear ๐... even though we actually went looking for them in Canada... Here in Austria, bears—brown bears, by the way—only live in a few mountain ranges, and even there they tend to wander back and forth between our country and other countries.
I'm so glad your bees made it! I read in one of your comments (I think it was at Iris' Blog) that you were worried about the delivery, and since I think bees are so important, I was worried too... but thankfully! Everything turned out well!
Thank you for your kind words on the passing of my sister-in-law ๐.
You wrote, among other things, that your dogs are semi-sensitive... their attention is apparently more focused on the bear visitors ๐
All the best from Austria, Traude
Wow, you had quite a night! Glad there wasn't much damage and that you got the bees in before the rain. And I hope you got lots of relaxing reading time ;-)
oh wow scary with a bear so close-yikes-glad you had the electric fence up that save your bees for sure.
(still no blog working sigh)
That is one healthy bear! Bear is good medicine. Bear brings balance, healing, strength, and introspection. Your are lucky. Now you know how much I love seeing the bees and how you care for them. This post really excites me seeing the new batch. Thank so much and have nice day.
Wow, bears and bees! Can you bear the bees? Just kidding. :) Lovely photos. I have heard of bears finding their way near homes in places like British Columbia and Alberta here in Canada, but thankfully have never heard of it here in Quebec. (I live in Montreal).
I am glad you got some time to relax.
We never get bears in our backyards here in Malaysia, so reading your story felt both thrilling and a little scary! ๐ป
You handled it so well, and then straight into bee‑keeping duties on top of that.
Honestly, after a morning like yours, a lazy day on the couch with a good book sounds more than well‑deserved. ๐๐ง️
Hi dear Erika, I think we do have bears in Quebec, but the people who may see them are off the island of Montreal...as far as I know! (more rural areas)
However, LOL, I have noticed that some turkeys have found their way here to Montreal, and I actually saw two (not together), and at different times...one was on the front lawn of a college campus and the other was in a parking lot of a shopping center near a metro station!
Since they are such a rare sight for us here, people were taking photos on their cellphones. Quite hilarious!
Here in the city, some people have also seen raccoons, groundhogs and foxes, but I haven't heard of any bear sightings in Montreal!
First, that was one scary encounter. A bit too close for comfort. So glad you had minimal damage from the bear. It could have done a lot worse damage.
I'm confused. Is this your third set of bees that are there this year? Did you have two sets that made it through the winter. or did I dream that? Do you normally have protective gear for your feet when dealing with the bees? Or am I having brain fog?
Well, that was a bit of excitement! It could have been worse though.
Funnily enough I have also seen bears. Brown bears. I'm Transsilvania (Romania) staying in Brasov. The brown bear `population is high and they often come into the city looking for food (they are vegetarians). So in the mountains nearby, the rangers are feeding them water melons as they love sweet things. They hope to avoid bears coming into the city. Watermelons are collected from the supermarkets. Those watermelons that are nearly going off. And they dump them at a certain clearing in the mountains and hope that the bears come and eat some. There is a hide so people can watch the bears. But there is no garantee of course of seeing bears as they live in the wild. We went to the hide yesterday and saw 5 bears!
Great! Your bees are safe! I hope they will do well.
WOW! your really had a day of it. I'd be scared if there was a bear outside my porch - you did well to take the photos of him. i have a hedgehog who comes for a feed at night - much less scary. Good luck with the new set of bees. Great photos of your trip in the previous post.
Avril xx
We almost bought some hives this year, but time got away from us and we have decided to hold off for another year. Thanks for your correction on my last post!
