Happy Sunday

Hi everyone. Happy weekend to you. It's the first day of summer for many of us and the first day of winter for others. I personally am enjoying these longer days, except I must admit that when the sun is coming up before 5 AM I tend to wake up on the early side too. Sometimes it is just a little too early. Ha ha!

It's father's day here in the US and a few other places like Canada too. Happy Father's Day to all of you who are dads of any kind. Here's my Dad, long before he was my Dad. Imagine a day when kids wore a tie for school photos. 😏 As someone who taught school for 36 years, the only time I saw ties was when the boys had to wear ties to school for the day before  sport competitions they were a part of, and even that disappeared over time.

Today I am joining Nicole for Sunday in the Art Room (SITAR)  and also Gillena for Sunday Smiles.       I'm also linking this page up to Matilde's  Houses and Buildings at Art Journal Journey.

I've been working on an America 250 art journal to celebrate this milestone. Here's one page I made for it, which is why you see a lot of red, white and blue on my page.

I covered my base pages with this red and white paper. Then I used some black ink around the area where I was placing the house just to help the house pop off the page a bit more. The house itself is from a TH set.

Beneath the house I added a strip of red metallic star border (sometimes called German scrap). Then I also used some 49 and Market punch out leaves. And finally I stamped  the quote.

And speaking of summer and the color red, it's strawberry season in my area right now. This past Friday was a gorgeous morning (and as I heard someone at the strawberry field say, it's not 80 and we're not melting while we pick). My husband and I went to a pick-your-own farm in the town next to ours. The picking was excellent!

While there, I saw a couple of barns and I thought of Tom and his Barn Collective that he posts on Sundays. Neither of these are as pretty as the barns he shows, but the second one was the cider and bakery barn so it definitely smelled wonderful.

And besides eating lots of fresh picked strawberries right out of the box, I also did a bit of strawberry baking when I got home. Strawberry pie, plain and simple.

Sadly I was a little bit off of the center for my big steam hole, but Oh well! It was tasty. ❤

Have a  great rest of your weekend and start to the new week.

Happy solstice! Your pie looks fabulous and I bet it's delicious! There's nothing like freshly picked strawberries. When we lived in Maine, we joined a CSA farm and they had u-pick fields with various things, but they had a couple of fields just for strawberries. What a treat! Enjoy every bite :-)

Wearing ties for sport competitions sounds really weird..ties for school pictures ain't that bad. That pie looks terrific! So true about the Tom's barn collections...wonder where and how he found all the gorgeous barns.

Your dad was a cutie.
I couldn't imagine a child going to school here (Australia) in casual or daggy clothes. The uniform ensures equality between the children, tidiness and pride in the school

I loved that photo of your dad. I have a strawberry post in the queue too -- I love those berries. Here they are going for $8.50/quart. I don't know how much picking your own is. Those days are over for me! Enjoy your Sunday and happy dad's day to your husband!

Erika, this is such a lovely post. Your dad, as a boy, is a cutie for sure. I'm always very impressed with your art and this is no exception. The house looks like one my great grandparents lived in while in Reno, NV. I think I have the photo somewhere. The strawberries look amazing. I wish we had a U Pick for them here. I love barns and these are wonderful. This looks like such a nice place. Thank you for sharing with SITAR and have a nice day.

We are out west on Vancouver Island right now and we had our first fresh strawberries out here on Friday. They were really sweet and juicy. Obviously it has been a good year - but they are not cheap! All the best- David

Great haul of my favourite fruit there Erika.

The subject of school sports was something we were discussing yesterday when we were assembled for a family bbq. We have several secondary teachers in our immediate family group and at not one of their schools is competitive sports now included in the curriculum. As we concluded, where does leave National sports teams of the future?

Oh, is that a cute pic of your Dad!
I turned down a job once because a "costume" was required.
Oh, to have a porch (we have one when holidaying in Madeley/Perth).
We got strawberries from our balcony/grocery - yum! To Summer, hugs!!!

While it is the 'start of summer' here, we have had hot weather for a few weeks.
I am glad that we didn't have to wear a tie to school at all. I would prefer to never wear one.I had to wear one for years of work, and I always hated it.
Those strawberries do look delicious - as does your pie.

Those are beautiful strawberries, Erika, and I love how your pie looks. The journal page is lovely too; your commemorative art journal for America's 250th would look quite pretty, I imagine. Sorry I haven't been around much, life will probably remain a bit busy the next few months, sigh. Hope your June has been going well. Anita xx

Your father was a good looking young man ... I'm guessing he proabaly is a handsome adult as well :)
I haven't been strawberry picking for years ... sounds like fun and yummy too. Hard not to pop one or two of those beauties in your mouth while you are picking, I bet. Also, I doubt if anyone will care if your steam hole is off center once they bite into that pie. All good stuff Erika ...

Belatedly, happy summer solstice! Sadly I got sick, so I rather feel like it's winter solstice, hehe. :D Cold, high body temperature, hot tea... :D If only I could have some of those strawberries! :)

I remember those days when we had to dress up for school photos-and the guys wore ties. Oh I miss not having berry farms nearby to pick fruits-I would freeze lots for the coming year-so good!
I love that you are making a 250th America's birthday journal I think that is why I am being drawn back in with my civil war reproduction fabrics-I am looking online for simple quilt patterns-I was never good with those tiny triangles etc.
Happy new week Kathy

Not sure how I missed this post. It's a wonderful tribute to your father. And what a great entry for Matilde's theme at AJJ. I sure like that background.

Strawberries. Love them straight off the vine with their little green hats. Not otherwise, though, although your pie looks very tasty.
