Hi everyone. Happy Sunday to you. I hope you're having a wonderful weekend so far.
Today I am sharing a journal page for Gillena's Trees Are Awesome, Aren't They? at Art Journal Journey. I will also be linking up this page to Nicole's Sunday in the Art Room and Gillena's Sunday Smiles . Plus since I've used various types of media, I will be linking up to Creative Artiste Mixed Media Challenge Blog which this month is #125 and always has a theme of Anything Goes.
My page today is more true for last Sunday's weather than for today, but I was thinking of the quote "April showers bring May flowers" when I created this page.
I started with an umbrella stencil and some water color markers. Then I used watercolor paints to make the colored sky over them. I like how watercolor paint took away the sharpness of the umbrella images.
Next I took a crackle stamp and stamped it along the bottom of the page because I needed some ground to base my other images on.
I painted the tree tops with acrylic paints and used a Sharpie to create the trunks. They may not look like trees here in New Hampshire in April, but someplace in April you already have green leaves. Probably more places than not already have green leaves. 😏
Then I took an older TH die as well as a small stack of colored cardstock. This is one of those thick chunky dies Sizix used to make a lot of, not the small metal frame dies that are more popular now, so I could cut a big stack of colored house shaped pieces at once. I assembled 3 of those images together to make my house.
On white paper I used a stencil and traced the square shapes that would become the windows. I cut them out, glued them down and drew in the details. I also outlined the house to give it more definition on my page. I then took a raindrop stamp (Impression Obsession) and some dark blue ink and stamped raindrops all over my page.
The flowers in the bottom windows are actually each a piece from some cloth trim that I clipped apart and colored in the center. I drew in a stem on each. I also added a punch-out picket fence from a 49 and Market image set. To finish the page, I stamped the eye in the middle and colored it in. I also die cut the umbrella and stamped the details. Then I used a quote from the same Hero Arts set that the eye and the umbrella image came from to finish this page.
The other day it was one of our warmest days so far. The hubby and I took the bee winter enclosure apart. Boy were there bees out and about. Here's the enclosure partially apart. It had a roof and another side wall on it which are missing in this photo.
There were so many bees going in and out. At one point there was a cloud of them in front of the entrance.
Once the enclosure was off I opened up the top and took a peek inside. There were a lot of bees on some of the left over winter food. I had really stuffed the hive with sugar patties and also pollen/protein patties in the fall. You can see where they have eaten away at the edges over the winter.
I didn't do a deep dive into the hive this time because the bees were pretty wound up with us down there taking down the winter enclosure and changing their environment. But I will take a deep dive into the hive soon. However, I can report that although they were curious about us and what we were doing, they were not aggressive and no one was stung. 😏 Of course we weren't nervous and just ignored them so they just went along with their own business as we were with ours.
I left the bags of half decayed garden leaves under the base to block any spring wind. But other than that, here's the hive now.
I'm really excited that with the very long, very cold and snowy winter we had the bees actually made it. 👍😀❤
In another month my next batch of bees will arrive so hopefully this year I'll have 2 hives. I have tried this before, and never had any luck, so we'll see what happens.
Have a great rest of your weekend and start to the new week.

I didn't know that you have to feed the bees...thought they look for food themselves. The rainy page looks quite pretty!
Oh, that is a wonderful piece of art!!!!
And a big YIPPEEEE for the bees! I´ve read their brais is as small as a sesame seed and yet they can remember people as in humans!
And that sometimes they fall asleep in flowers with the pollen on their legs cause they´re so exhausted!
When very hot weather the nectar might turn into alcohol and drunk bees are not allowed inside! It´s an amazing world!
Have a great Sunday, hugs
Your art could depict the weather here. Plenty of April showers (as well as January, February, and March showers--LOL). I think your page is very cheerful. I do love the rain. Good luck with your second hive!
Hrgh, blogger again, huh?! You can delete the double, please... but, what I wanted to say (for in case you don´t pop back).. the butterfly-clips are for super-extra-thin hair! They have them for all kinds of hair! If you like I can give you the contact...
Glad your bees survived the winter! They'll be busy soon!
Creative mixed media art 🎨 👍🏼
I get shivers from your bees 🐝 I've got a Wasp sting once 😒
Happy Sunday 🥰
Happy bee farming, Erika
Thanks for your page for AJJ, thanks for playing
And thanks for linking to SundaySmiles
Much love

Braver than I with Bees, the next farm up has some and I always duck when I hear the hum of them heading home. Your journal page lovely and colourful and depicts the saying well and I'm really hoping all this rain dies indeed give way to lots of flowers.

I am elated about your bees! That is so excited! Do you have one of those spacesuit outfits or big netty hats that makes you look like Katharine Hepburn in the "African Queen" when you work closely with the bees? If not, you are braver than I! I just love that you are doing this!
I really love your art today. That eye on the door is mesmerizing. I love it. The raindrops are so perfect for this piece. It's pouring rain here today. Now for the bees. My favorite part of your post. They sure do look healthy and ready for summer. I so enjoy seeing your bees and how you care for them. An art itself for sure. Thank you for sharing with SITAR and have a lovely Sunday.
Fun April showers page. I'm like that eye looking out the front door and crying because it's rainy and cold. Hooray for the bees. That's so exciting that they made it through the horrible winter. Nothing horrible about today. Enjoy the sunshine and warmer temps later in the week!
Good afternoon, I am really loving your art piece and what an awesome protection for your bees! Love that they alive and well-hugs
Wonderful that the bees made it through the summer - I can understand that you are happy about that. I hope that this year the second hive will work out for you.
Your journal page is lovely. Yes, here in my corner all the leaves are green and I enjoy this so much. This weekend, however, has been cold (California cold) with a very substantial amount of rain and even some thunder and lightning which is rare for this area. I don't mind the rain at all, on the contrary. I live with the illusion that rains later in the spring will delay the wildfire season. I wish you a wonderful week ahead, hugs - Carola
It is so wonderful to hear that your bees survived such a long, snowy New Hampshire winter! There is no feeling quite like opening that hive for the first time in spring and seeing a cloud of healthy, active bees instead of a quiet box. It sounds like your strategy of "over-stuffing" them with sugar and protein patties really paid off. It is also a great sign that they weren't aggressive; happy, well-fed bees are usually much more patient with us humans poking around their homes.
Your journal page is such a vibrant celebration of April! Using that crackle stamp for the ground adds a lovely texture, and those "houses" made from the chunky Sizzix dies bring such a cozy, folk-art feel to the spread. It is true that while New Hampshire might still be waiting for those bright green leaves, your art perfectly captures the feeling of spring that we are all reaching for this month. The little cloth flowers in the windows are a clever mixed-media touch.
I've never known anyone who had bees. That was interesting. I wouldn't be able to have bees myself as I'd be scared of getting stung.
Nice art work dear Erika. And it´s good that the bees came over winter. Maybe you will get a lot of honey soon.
Have a good time and all the best
Violetta
Impressive diary page,
the umbrella is very beautiful, I like that you also write about the process.
Thanks for the information!!
Bees and honey, a whole philosophy,
I'm glad they survived, I hope you make a second hive!!
It’s great to see that the bees have overwintered well. All your hard work in the fall paid off. I hope they will produce lots of honey for you. All the best - David
That's wonderful bee news, Erika! Hope your second hive thrives too, good luck. Your art feels a bit spiritual to me. Is that because of the eye, I'm not sure. Lots of texture too, some good imagery there. (And thanks for joining Creative Artiste with this page.) Happy April. Anita xx
Lovely art and I like that quote. (I was thinking it a few days ago, too.) I'm glad your bees made it through this bitterly cold Winter that New England had this time. Ugh.
It's a fabulous piece Erika showing just how nature intended us to experience so many different weathers this time of year, i'm always very pleased to see the rain in April as it fills up my water butts and the Spring flowers do love a good drink :D
How nice to see the Bee's have been woken, I'm looking forward to seeing how active your hive becomes. I do not envy you with all those fallen leaves.
Thank you for sharing your journal page with us @ Creative Artiste your support is greatly appreciated. Hugs Tracey xx
What a unique journal page. I guess it's the eye that makes it so for me. I think this is a fabulous entry for Gillena's theme at AJJ.
What wonderful news about the bees. After failures in previous years, it's good to see your efforts have finally been rewarded. I'm sure others would have given up. Glad you didn't.
I love your colorful AJJ page! I'm sure it's a lot of work, but glad you and your husband are taking the time to care for the bees. Blessings!
What a brilliant page and scene, love the rainy sky with the soft umbrellas - thats worked so well. Our trees in Cornwall, England are beginning to fill out but not quite as green as these....but soon will be. Lovely to hear about the bees, hopefully they will have a very successful year.
Thank you for joining us once again at https://creativeartistemixedmedia.blogspot.com/
This is a wonderful look into the nature and productivity of bees. I have only seen hives from a distance, and I look forward to more of what you do as you time goes by. Enjoyed this very much, thank you!
Did not want to forget your lovely card either. Sometimes my publish finger gets ahead of my brain!
