Friday Faces

Hi everyone. Happy Friday to you. I hope you've had a good past week.  I've been holding down the fort since my husband's back issues (he has a herniated disc in his lower lumbar vertebrae) means he hasn't been able to do much of anything. He's in quite a bit of pain when he's sitting and then leg pain after standing awhile. 😓  He's not the best patient, and I'm a bit of a strict nurse. I don't think he's happy I nag him to follow doctor's orders when he's inclined to  not want to move because of the pain.

Today I'm joining Nicole at  Friday Face Off   and also Gillena at  Friday Lunch Break.

I have one face left from the holidays  to share today. I saw this face back when I went to the light show at Sandy Hill Farm  with my family right before Christmas.

They had this giant wizard at the entrance made out of wood and some other items. In many ways it reminded me of one of the troll statues by artist Thomas Dambo, except of course this guy is a wizard not a troll and that he was covered in holiday lights.

It's hard to get an actual size of him from these photos, but you can see the 6 foot fence behind him, so let me just say he was huge.

The  other faces I have for today are a few from my bird feeder. Some of my bluebirds from last summer's nests are hanging around. They have to compete with this flock of starlings that swoop in and eat most of the meal worms.  Those starlings are cagey too. They sit in the trees just beyond the house and they send one down to check out if I am standing in the doorway. When I am, that bird swoops up onto a branch and starts chattering to his cronies. When I'm not, they swoop in for the food, and I can hear them from inside the house.

Usually they empty the whole feeder in a matter of minutes. After the starlings fly off, one of the bluebirds will sit  on my  post and stare towards the door hoping to catch my attention so I'll go fill the feeder :)

And when I fill the feeder they all fly in right away.

The key is that the bluebirds also prefer to eat early in the day, and the starlings just a little bit later.

The other day once the bluebird flew off the deck post this guy decided to look at me with the hopes I'd throw him some cracked corn. Ha ha. He looks like he's had as pretty good diet this winter, doesn't he?

And this last photo isn't the best because it's a great example of camouflage, but while we were celebrating back at Christmas, I noticed this guy sitting on the bird feeder. I think he's a Sharp Shinned hawk. You can't really tell his size from this photo, but he wasn't very large. He never did get any holiday dinner at my feeder that day.

That's all for me today. I hope everyone has a great rest of your Friday and start to your weekend.

That's one plump squirrel! I love the Dambo Father Christmas (or Woodland Sprite or Green Man or whatever it is!). Fantastic! Wishing your husband well -- and you too, during his recovery!

What a privilege it is to be able to see all that wildlife from your window. And of course it's great that you can help them through the winter by feeding them. (well, you're not feeding the eagle).
Now I'm going to mske a cup of tea and read your book blog.
Have a lovely weekend,
Lisca

The bluebirds are a special treat, Erika, and I am glad they get their share of the mealworms. As for nagging your husband to follow the doctor’s orders, I am quite sure that’s what you are supposed to do. Miriam would do no less! All the best - David

I do so enjoy our Nature photos Erika and usually try and compare how the birds and animals live differently in your Country. The Starlings for instance always migrate late August, supposedly to warmer climes, yet there they all are in your snowy landscape.

A buzzard once managed to eat a blackbird at my bird feeder when there was heavy snow.
Now it's snowing again. It's similar at my bird feeder to yours, except I have sparrows instead of starlings.
And the squirrel from the woods has never dared to come near me.
All the best to your husband; a slipped disc is truly awful. Get well soon.
That light magician is quite a sight.
Here too, it's still lit up all around; in the evening it looks like a fairytale town.
This beautiful time will be over by Candlemas on February 2nd at the latest.
Best wishes. Viola

What a trying time for both of you. Hopefully he recovers quickly and life gets back to normal.
It is so weird for me to see bluebirds in the snow as ours leave well before the first flakes fly.

I so sorry about hubby's back! I hope the pain eases. Good that he has a strict nurse around to push him into following doc's orders :-)
