T Stands for Going on an Owl Hunt

Hi everyone. Happy new week to you. And here's a big hello to everyone who stops by for T this week over at   Bleubeard's and Elizabeth's blog .

Thanks for all your teapot comments. I'd forgotten about electric teapots. I used to have one when I taught school  because I had a good place behind my desk to keep it. It was always tasty to have a cup of tea (or 2) during the day. The kids used it too, so by the time I retired, although it still worked, the teapot had definitely seen better days.

So what's up with me? As some of you have already read, in the  early part of last week my husband ended up in the hospital for a night with a herniated disc in his back. Even though he was more or less recuperating all week (and he still is as it could take 4 to 6 weeks to completely heal), by the end of the week his pain was getting a little bit under control and with physical therapy, he was getting a little more mobile. We had some nicer weather by the end of the week too, and I needed to get out of the house, so I kept my walking plans. One of those days my friend Deb and I headed down to the shore and went on a Snowy Owl hunt.

We were very optimistic because when we left on our mini-roadtrip  we had both seen bald eagles. I saw one soaring along the roadside while driving to her house, and she saw one near her house. In fact, when we were out we saw 2 other bald eagles. But sadly, I never was able to get any photos of  eagles.

However, the Northern Harrier that is commonly seen at Salisbury State Beach Reservation (where we went) in Massachusetts was having quite the hunting day, and we spotted her several times. Most of my photos aren't that great, but a few aren't too bad. It's not that easy to get photos of birds in flight.

This one is a little fuzzy but I still  like it.

For those of you who are bigger bird watchers than me, you probably already know that harriers hunt by flying low over the ground. And if you don't know that, it's an interesting way to hunt. That's what she was doing in those above photos. Later on, when we left, she was sitting not too far off the roadside and had collected a lot of human admirers.

I took these photos on a 400x lens and then did a bit of cropping. Everyone was being respectful of the bird and giving her her space.

Besides the excitement of seeing the harrior, we also took a 3 mile/4.8 km walk, watched the seals, and saw a few other birds.  But no snowy owls. 😞

Still, it was a beautiful day to be outside, and it recharged me to go  home and deal with my patient. (I don't want to sound like it's miserable at home, because it's not. But between my husband getting sick of resting and between his sore back,  at times it's a bit challenging.😇😈) Here's a few other wildlife photos I took that day that  I like.

a ring billed gull (older juvenile I believe) and below, some crows

some either fluffed-up or well fed mallards

and some seals lounging on some rocks and a sand bar

After a fun morning out, we stopped for lunch on our drive home, and that's where my T day drink is from. We stopped at Seacoast Soups in Hampton, New Hampshire, and here's my bowl of chicken noodle soup as well as the Diet Coke I picked up to drink. I also had a piece of their homemade cornbread, but it didn't make the photo. You can see Deb's in the background though.

That's it for me this week. I hope everyone has a wonderful T day and week ahead.

You took some great photos! You are a talented photographer. I hadn’t heard of the Northern Harrier before your post. Happy T Day!

Very nice 400mm lens. I've not shot that before. I have a friend who does and she loves to shoot nature. Pretty cool shots from both of you. Sounds like a nice day for sure. Sending your hubby healing wishes.

Visually entertaining as always Erika, the Norther Harrier is not one we get here although do have a growing variety of raptors. Last year a Common Buzzard took up residence in the orchard after Autumn pruning and stayed on with his mate and produced one young which made good viewing. Nature is amazing isn't it.

All the best to hubby, can identify.

Great photos! And thanks again for the km :-)
Yes. I read you with sick Hubby at home...
You made me laugh about the mallards! I have never had cornbread. On the flight from Perth to Adelaide they handed out banana-bread - not too bad!
To a great week ahead, hugs

It’s always exciting to watch a Northern Harrier as you point out, and it is definitely not easy to get good pictures. The professionals spend many hours getting the kind of shots you see in wildlife magazines. Dealing with a sick person at home is never pleasant - for either party. All the best - David

I love your photos. I am RARELY able to get a good flight photo -- either too high, even with the zoom and cropping -- or too fast. Bravo and wonderful sightings too. it looks like a good day for a walk. I love my electric teakettle. I've had it for years and may replace it and retire this one to the cottage, where I still use a pan to heat up tea water! Good luck with the patient. I remember that from Rick's broken foot a number of years ago. They get antsy!

Good morning, What an awesome day you had!
Larry and I have always enjoyed bird watching too-and Larry knows the names of most all them-if not he looks them up. Your photos were great thank you
I think when new owners bought the property up on top of the hill from us-with all their cleaning up and noise they have made-"our" eagle pair has moved on sadly. Or possibly the hen has died and the male left the area .For several months-not breeding season we would only see the male I really miss seeing them
Happy Tuesday

I kept hoping for your photo of the Snowy Owl, but I guess it didn’t show up. One winter a few years ago, Snow Owls came down into our part of Michigan, and we managed to to see one — amazing luck! They are further south than normal this year but not all the way to our area.

Beautiful photos, Erika. I love wildlife photos (but I don't travel much these days, so content with neighborhood cat photos haha), and I agree, it's pretty hard to click pics of creatures in motion. Your photos will be a nice reminder of the wonderful day you've had (and a change of pace from the caretaking), so that's really nice. Hope your husband feels better soon. Also, thanks for hosting the challenge at AJJ with a super-versatile topic this month. It's been a while since I joined challenges, and it felt really nice to not have to struggle to follow a theme. Glad to hear your husband is healing a bit. You took some outstanding photos. The soup looks so good. Have a wonderful day today.

A soup restaurant seems like a great thing :-) I'm glad hubby is experiencing less pain and I hope that continues and he'll soon be pain-free. And then you'll be able to hang up your nurse uniform for a while ;-)

I would love to be a better birder than I am, but I enjoy watching birds and painting them. I know we have harriers here (Finger Lakes area, NY) and I have heard there's a place we could spot some snowy owls. I have a birder friend who has seen them.
I hope your husband gets better very soon.

I'm sorry to hear about your husband's injury. Ugh.

I didn't realize Snowy Owls were coming as far south as NH this Winter. (I'll have to check the owl news, to see how far south they are coming this year. One year I was on a CT beach, freezing, where one had been seen, but it wasn't there while I and many other bird fans / photographers waited.)

Your bird of prey story reminded me that a few weeks ago, I saw two hawks fight over a kill behind my house. I don't know which one caught it (a squirrel), but there was a brief skirmish while one tried to steal it from the other.
