Friday Faces

Hi everyone. Happy Friday. Today I'm joining  Nicole for her Friday Face Off and Gillena for her Friday Lunch Break.

I keep a daily journal  where I write whatever I want to record and where I make quick sketches of things.  I usually draw in pen (I like a black LePen because it dries quickly and doesn't tend to smudge), and then I used some markers to color in the image. Some of my drawings come out better than others, especially if I have some practice drawing with a particular item. The whole point of drawing in pen is that I don't want to take hours to fill in a page and I don't want to write words in pencil nor have to outline a pencil drawing with a pen. If a particular drawing doesn't come out great, I  just move on. In other words, my journal is not a finished piece, but more a place to record things I want to remember and a place to experiment with drawing something.

And surprisingly, I learned that sometimes having a really awful drawing to look back on is a good lesson to see what not to do next time. 😏

Since I need a face or faces for today, here's some of the animal faces I have drawn in the last month that I am very happy with.

above- a sleeping barred owl and below, a pheobe

I've been trying to improve how I draw birds.  I don't need to have them be perfect, but I also don't want them to be strictly cartoons.
You can see in this next drawing that when I mess up with the drawing pen, I use a white pen (Uniball white signo) like an eraser and cover up the mistake with it.

This next guy is Barney, the Seadog Brewery mascot.

And finally the long eared owl I saw a few weeks ago.

I'll finish this post with some views from Easter, well sort of Easter. My husband did a Trader Joe's run before the holiday, and he brought me home a couple of surprises. One was a bouquet of some tulips and some daffodils.

He also brought me this box of Italian chocolate Easter eggs, which were very very tasty. Each color was a different flavor. There were dark chocolate, milk chocolate, coffee flavored chocolate, and hazelnut chocolate eggs. The color arrangement of the eggs was also eye-candy to me also.

Have a super start to your weekend everyone.

Practice makes perfect as the old adage goes. And it’s your journal after all, so you can be the ultimate judge of quality. All the best - David

I love your practice of doing a quick drawing each night in your journal. That's excellent. I've considered doing some kind of daily stitching practice, but I never seem to settle on exactly what kind of project to start. You've inspired me to think about this again :-) Enjoy your weekend!

Hi Erika! I love all the sweet critters you drew, especially the owls and Barney. Your husband Easter surprises were truly sweet and special. I love chocolate eggs, so I'm intrigued by the Italian ones he got. Happy FFO!

I love your owl sketches. And my mouth is watering at the sight of the Italian chocolate eggs.
I've been reading your book blog post from a few days back. Apart from The Robert Goddard book, I hadn't read any of them but I always take your reviews seriously as we seem to have the same taste in books. I thought I had read all of Agatha Christie's books but I don't seem to remember that one. Also I have read several of Ruth Gallaway books but not these.
I'm in the process of making a list of books I have on Kindle (about 200) and then marking the ones I read and marking the 'want-to-reads' as well. And then try not to buy any more books.
I am enjoying my audio books and have just finished Black Notice by Joy Ellis. Joy Ellis writes crime stories set in England. This series is a duo called Jackman and Evans, a male and a female detective who are the best of friends and work very well together. They are real people and very likeable. Black Notice is the latest in the series and definitely the best (I think I've read them all).
Have a great weekend,
Lisca

Ohhh I love seeing your journal. These drawings, done in ink, are excellent. I love that just creating in a journal can make a difference in ones life. Your birds tell a story on their own. The flowers are beautiful and those eggs, yummmmm. Thank you for sharing with FFO and have a lovely weekend.

Erika, I like your journal drawings. They are far better than what I make, and in particular I like the barred owl and the phoebe. I'm not very good in drawing birds, but I'm learning. In my opinion, all these sketches and drawings make your journal even more personal. Have a lovely weekend, hugs - Carola

Your bird faces really capture the mood of each creature, at least what I see as their moods. Reminds me of the book by Amy Tan about the year she watched birds. (“Backyard Bird Chronicles”)

Lovely sketches, I sometimes think the quick ones come out better than the ones I spend ages on. The eggs look nice too.

Your sketches in your journal are wonderful and if not perfect that is okay because this is your journal and you will learn from your mistakes if you can go back over the pages. I love the owls and how lucky you are to see a Long eared Owl ... They are rare around here. In fact I think there is only one place that we can hopefully find them and I haven't been back there since we moved further away.
The flowers and candy are both yummy each in it's own way. You can't beat Trader Joe's, right? Or a husband who brings you candy and flowers ... Lovely post Erika ...
