Hi everyone. Happy new week to you. And a warm hello to those of you who stop by Bleubeard's and Elizabeth's blog blog for T day this week. And a warm hello to everyone else who stops by too.
Last week flew by even though we had a lot of rain and clouds. At least we didn't get snow. 👍 I went out to lunch and saw the movie Project Hail Mary with some friends one day. I really liked it. It was actually the second time I saw it because I went with my husband right after it started playing. It's based on the book by the same name by Andy Weir. I enjoyed the book when I read it several years ago, and since I'm not a huge Sci Fi reader, that surprised me. I think I need to read it again however to see how it compares to the film.
A few weeks back our dishwasher (which was almost 14 years old) started doing a weird thing. You'd close the door, and it would turn itself on and start washing. No matter how many times you hit the off button, it wouldn't turn off. Although it still washed no problem, the electronic panel was obviously shot. We turned the power off on the dishwasher, and after a few days of hand washing dishes we decided we'd go and buy a new one.
My husband is a very handy guy, and he had installed the couple of other dishwashers we have had in the 36 years we've lived in our house. The store where we bought this new dishwasher (a local appliance and TV store) had it in stock, so we were able to bring it home the same day we purchased it.
My husband had to pull out the old dishwasher first, so the new one sat boxed up in our living room for a day.
Please ignore the mess on my counter, but the old one is now out.
We moved the new dishwasher into the kitchen to install it. That's when my husband discovered that the plug for the new dishwasher was not on the same side as it was on the old dishwasher. He also discovered that this dishwasher (unlike the old one) just fit into the spot under the counter. And when I say it just fit, I mean there wasn't even a millimeter of spare room.
Since my husband still works 3 days a week, the dishwasher had to sit where you see it in the above photo for a few days. That meant more hand washing dishes (by far not the worst thing), and that we had to work around it in our already small kitchen (that was the tricky part). It meant it was a tough week for cooking anything.
When his work week was finished, he engineered a way to move the plug. That took a bit because he had to go through the basement ceiling /kitchen floor that was well as the thick layer of insulation that was there . It's a good thing he is not only handy but is an engineer so is good at solving problems like this.
You might remember how earlier in this post I wrote that the dishwasher just fit in the space. Our cabinets and counter top are about 50 years old (another project one of these days), and so he had to cautiously jack up the counter top just to get the dishwasher in.
Luckily that went smoothly, although it took both of us to maneuver it into the space. We didn't want any crinkled hoses or electrical wire.
Now it's in! I noticed when we went dishwasher shopping that many now come with a third upper rack for silverware or more so for us for things like container lids, spatulas and big cooking spoons. I love this new-to-me feature. I think this dishwasher has so much more room for dirty dishes because of that. 👍
For T day this week let me show you some clean glasses. I was emptying the dishwasher the other day and when I had just a few glasses left to take out, I thought of this post and snapped this photo.
There are some other glasses in this post, as well as a couple of bottles of coke products that both my husband and myself had put down when we moved in the dishwasher. If you didn't spot them, there are plenty of glasses here to serve as my drink for this week. 😉
That's all for me today. Wishing everyone a happy T day and week ahead.

We have an old dishwasher in our house that still works very well. We call him David. All the best - Dishwasher David.
I immediately saw the two Coke bottles near the new dishwasher and wondered why you didn't call that your drink entry for T. Now I see why. Your dishwasher sure gets glasses clean and spot free. Sadly there is NO place to install a dishwasher in my home. Not even a place for a portable one.
Thanks for sharing your trials and tribulations with your new dishwasher with us, as well as your glasses and cokes you gave us for T this week, dear Erika.
It's great that your husband is so handy and could do all the installation and necessary changes himself! Enjoy your new dishwasher!
We hand-wash all glass and crockery by hand, leaving pots, pans and cutlery for the dish washer.
The entree is always cold and placed in a glass dish. The main course is always cooked in one pot eg fish, rice and vegetables together. Easy to do, once the children moved into their own homes.
I like reading what “things” are going on in your life. You did good to have a dishwasher for 14 years! We rent and they must buy very cheap dishwashers because we are on our second in 7 years, and we have had it now for 4 years now, and the baskets are rusting bad! Happy T Day.
Great job to hubby on this install!-Christine cmlk79.blogspot.com
The dishwasher in the apt is about 7 years old as they put in a new one with a kitchen remodel a few years after we moved in. It’s not a top of the line unit as those are not installed in rentals. On the plus side, if it has issues, we can just send in a maintenance request. Glad your husband is handy and was able to get your new one in. I was wondering how you disposed of the old unit.
We also just bought a new dishwasher, but we had it installed by the appliance store service. Your description of the challenges of DIY make me glad we did that. (actuallly, we never do it ourselves). I guess they all have the third rack now. I not only put the utensils and the lids of storage boxes on that shelf, I also put the scrubbers and handiwipes up there. It seems to work well.
Wish my husband were this handy! My 20-year old dish washer is also Bosch :-)) and still runs pretty good, though some areas are rusting.
You SO had me laughing on your dish washer!!! Just to imagine, hihihi....And on we go (in real life I am the dish washer).
Oh , a bit of drama with the new one! But... Small kitchen?! Looks huge compared to ours...
Hm. Off to do the dishes... (it´s just the two of us so it´s not too much to do). Hugs and to a great T-Day!
I had to smile how you tied this in with T-liked that. I have never used a dishwasher-my whole life i have always hand washed-and never mind it-but is what I am used to.
There is a dishwasher here at the lake house-never used it. I am glad your husband knew how to do everything to get the new one installed-sounded like quite the project.
hugs from the lake
Always a bad day when appliances have to be replaced, but as you say new ones often come with bonus new features.
Smiled at hubby with his head torch, mine borrowed youngest Son's one day (he's a semi professional athlete and often runs a mere 20 miles to train at silly o'clock before work), he was instantly sold and ordered one from Amazon, now I can see where he is in the dark when he's out with the girls. Win for us both.
Have a good week,
B x
I'm glad you got all that sorted! Hopefully this one will last for many, many years!
...you sure have a handy fellow!
Yay to handy husbands. I hate washing dishes by hand so hooray and long life to the new dishwasher. Happy T Day. The sun is out and the snow is gone. I hope it's the same way at your house.
It's nice having handy men at home (at least until they get frustrated!) I had my dishwasher sitting in the hallway for a month before Rick got onto it -- and then it took all day, a vociferous vocabulary and multiple trips to the hardware store to get it done. (It's till not firmly packed in so I have to kick it back in with my hip when I load.) But it washes like a charm!
You have a talented husband! I have never had an electric dishwasher, but at this very moment, my wonderful husband is busy washing the dishes! He says he enjoys it!!!
Hurray for handy husbands. I had one too and I miss having a handyman around. Congrats on your new dishwasher. Mine has broken down. It rinses when not in use, even with the door open there is water running. So I have unplugged it and am looking for a repair service. Not so easy when you live out in the sticks. In the meantime I'm hand washing everything. Not a problem as I live alone and I don't have many dishes.
It's curious that we are both reading a sci-fi book. I haven't seen that film, nor read the book, but I'll look out for it.
Happy T-Day,
Lisca
Nice, congrats on the new dishwasher.
Full marks to your husband in making the necessary changes and doing the installation. Enjoy using your new dishwasher :)
All the best Jan
I don't even recall last time I saw movie, in a theater.
Well, I guess he installed a plug for one of your old ones because we don't have a plug here in this "old" house, just hard-wired. So of course the new dishwasher we bought months ago had a plug but had to be hard-wired. LUCKILY, the Home Depot guys relented and wired it, said they run into this a lot. We gave them a good tip! They were supposed to tell us to call them when an electrician installed the plug. We forgot all about it since that dishwasher was installed in like 2000. The new home has a plug, thankfully AND a new dishwasher.
I love that he did this for you guys and got it installed. I also love that shelf all the way at the end that that gives me an idea for my own space. I might build a side shelf. I think that might work when/if I move the fridge again. Thanks!
