October

Hi everyone. Happy new  month. It can't possibly be October already, but according to the calendar it definitely is.

The new month means we are starting a new challenge at Art Journal Journey. Thank you again Neet for hosting  last month. And thank you to everyone who shared some journaling with us too. it was a fun month at AJJ.

This month we welcome the talented Elle from Empire of the Cat blog as our new host.
Her theme is

Fairy Tales, Folklore and Fables-Tell Me a Story .
This should be another fun month at AJJ also. You can read what Elle means by her topic over at the Art Journal Journey homepage.

My first page is my take on the fairy tale story of Red Riding Hood.  If you aren't familiar with Red Riding Hood, she is a girl who goes off to visit her bedridden grandmother. The wolf dresses up as the grandmother and crawls into her bed, so when Red arrives, she has to visit with the wolf instead of Grandmother. And she has to avoid being the wolf's dinner also. This fairytale has an interesting history and many interesting versions that I didn't know about.  You can read about the fairytale here on Wikipedia if you are interested: Red Riding Hood.

My version is a little more modern. Red is out for a walk on a beautiful night, and on this walk, she comes across the wolf. He isn't really big or bad either. He doesn't go to Grandma's and eat her, nor does he crawl into her bed and try to fool Red.

In fact my stamped image of the wolf makes him look more like a dog  who happens to be wearing his Halloween wolf costume a little early. I think he forgot that Halloween is not celebrated during  the whole month of October. Smile.

Red teases him by telling him what big eyes he says, and at that point, he wags his tail and follows Red back to her house. There he lives with her happily ever after. He was in fact her dog, and Red was having a bit of a game dressing him up and playing at being Red Riding Hood and the wolf.

To make my page I started with some colored pencils and a piece of black cardstock. I drew the trees and even added a full moon  on the far right side of the trees. I like my trees, but I really like how my moon looks since it is drawn in, not cut out of paper.

I then took some gold metallic spray and gave my page a few squirts. This creates the moonlight and the sparkling stars that are helping Red to be able to walk after dark.

Red and the wolf are  an AALL & Create Janet Klein stamp set. The quote is also from this stamp set. And I don't know why every time I go to color a face I get dark and light patches from my markers. Hmmm.

I created the grass by cutting out some white paper, using green gouache paint on it and then after it was glued down and dried, I used some color pencils to add in some details.  Finally to smooth out the bottom I added the strip of alphabet washi tape.

I must also mention our dreaded rules. Remember we are an art journaling challenge, and art journaling is accepted, but please no cards, tags, ATCS, etc. Any kind of art journaling is accepted however.

I'm looking forward to seeing your Fairytales, Folklore and Fables this month.

Have a wonderful start to the new month, and thanks for visiting my blog.

I like your take on this story, Erika. Seems Red and the wolf are happy together in more than one tale today. I like how the "wolf" is hiding in that grass. This is a fun first entry for Elle's theme at Art Journal Journey, dear.

Hi Erika, I love that we are using the same story for the first page - great minds and all that eh! I love your little Red and the wolf, they are so cute, and your moon and trees look great too. (PS I don't have lots of pages made already, I'm being spontaneous this month!) Thanks for joining me for the October theme at Art Journal Journey this month Elle/Empire of the Cat xx

I just love those paper dolls and your take on the story. Though your page also makes me think of the song "Little Red Riding Hood" by Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs.
*howl*
What's that I see walkin' in these woods?
Why, it's Little Red Riding Hood.
Hey there, Little Red Riding Hood,
You sure are lookin' good,
You're everything that a big, bad wolf could want...
and now I gave myself an ear worm. Enjoy the day today. Perfect day to stay inside and art

I am off to find out more about Red Riding Hood - thanks for the link.
In the meantime I love your Red Riding Hood, she is so pretty and cute and her little dog is a cutie too. I love the remake of the story Erika style, this has such a happy ending and we all love happy endings to be truthful. Fab page!
Hugs, Neet xx

Hi Erika, Happy October! I, too, am just amazed it's here already, but the weather has been very welcome here. Well, I think this is one of your BEST EVER pages! I love every detail. Those trees! The way you drew the green leaf lines on them is genius, and yes, your moon is stellar! Heck, I get the marker streaks with my blendable alcohol markers so don't feel bad. They say it's the paper that does it? XOX
