Trick? or Treat?

Hi everyone. Happy Thursday. This week is going by too fast. I've been trying to get some must do chores completed (clean up all the books in my daughter's room before she comes home this weekend and get the bees partially winterized), and I haven't had any art time, sadly. Luckily I always work on several pages at once so I do have some things to share today.

Since we are so close to Halloween, it is time for some spooky art again. My art today is  on the dark side.  I am joining Elle's Fairytales, Folktales and Fables: Tell Me a Story challenge over at Art Journal Journey

Now to explain my page. In many fairy tales someone dies, often a princess's or young woman's mother or father who might even be the king or queen. And often there is an old crone (you don't hear that word very often, do you?)  who brings some magic potion which, if it doesn't kill you, might put you to sleep for years. You may drink that potion or maybe it's in the form of a magic apple so some other treat.

My page is in my Halloween altered book.  You can decide if this woman is the "old crone" who is delivering the potion or if she is the poor person who received it. I did some inking of the background, and then layered 2 pieces of ephemera. The photo is not an actual photo but from an ancient collage sheet.  All the potions are images I either stamped, colored and fussy cut or they are ones I drew and added. I also added some bits of cut out paper I had to make a couple of "corners" on my page, and I also added lots of little foamy bits.

Today is  Rain's Thursday Art and Dinner Date , and this week her challenge is Trick? or Treat? I think my spooky page also (in a broad sense) works for that because often in fairy tales the treat ends up being a trick.

And here's a couple of fun Trick or Treat pages  I made in 2019.

And for the dinner date part of this post, I have this super yummy leftover meal.

Every once in a blue moon I get a hankering for pot roast. I made one last week, and it was a yummy meal. However,  we still had a bit of left overs, but not enough for 2 people for a second meal. My solution,  I made hash.

I fried up some chopped onion and  peppers, then I added the leftover roasted potatoes and carrots along with the leftover beef. I served this with a couple of fried eggs on top.

I find this is just as yummy as the original roast was. And this made extra servings so now I have lunch for a couple of days also, all from a tiny piece of leftover pot roast. I love it when things work out that way.

That's all for me today. Thanks for visiting.

Good morning Erika, I really like your halloween pages very much! I had a taste for a beef roast too this week, but since I didn't have one in my freezer I made a take on a beef stew with a package of beef stew meat.
starting to warm back up a bit today-Happy thursday Kathy

Happy National Black Cat Day! Love your Halloween inspired pages today Erika, I can't decide if she gave the potion or drank the potion, she doesn't look too happy does she? I have never had hash but it looks like it could be tasty (without the meat) Thanks for joining me for the October theme at Art Journal Journey this month Elle/Empire of the Cat xx

Wonderful post. I love your page. So much detail to it. I mad a pot roast last week too. Our leftovers was hot beef sandwiches. However, your hash looks so good and I will remember that the next time I make a roast. Have a great day today.

Love the Halloween page. I think I could get a job as an old crone, and hope I wouldn't be poisoned! Your food looks delicious, and I am hungry, so I need to find some food now! Hugs, Valerie

The poor lady, now, is she the victim or not?
Candy, hm, we skip again this year but you enjoy - would you mind to share pics of trick or treaters?
I think we will not see any here....
Hmmmm, left overs pimped, very good! :-) Hugs and yum!

Cute pages! I think she was the one who delivered it as she looked a bit mean in that photo. I would love to have some of those leftover pot roast! Looks so good :-)

Love the look of y0our cooking. Good hearty winter food - very yummy to look at bet it was yummier to taste.
Love the Halloween pages - doesn't black and orange look great together? The bottom one is very striking with those pumpkins - nice not scary.
I don't know which potions you have drawn yourself, they all look so good together I cannot tell. Great drawing skills. As for the female, she could be the one who has taken the potion, her eyes are rather black looking, but then again it could be because she is an evil crone. I remain neutral on that one. It's a great page and the composition is great. Certainly gets its message across. Spooky!

Your Halloween pages are fun. I especially love the retro Jack o'Lanterns. As to being tempted, I think I need something better than an apple. Cannoli maybe or some other Italian pastry. I love when you can stretch leftovers into more leftovers.

I'm having a terrible time trying to leave a comment. Blogger kept wanting me to log in before I could comment. I was already logged in.

I adore your old crone entry. I thought this was a cabinet card when I saw it.It's a wonderful entry and I love the spider web looking corners you added. Its a super entry for Elle's theme at AJJ, dear. I also enjoyed seeing some of your older art. I can tell you rally LOVE Halloween.

You can't really tempt me with your pot roast, but I bet it was good, anyway. Have a super Friday, dear.

That's a fun one and I like how you did the bottles -- but my fave are all those marvelously delightful pumpkins! BIG Happy!

Erika, you created some great looking Halloween art, my favorite was the pumpkins as scary things are not for me. Getting a couple of meals from anything these days is wonderful and your choices looked delicious.

What an excellent idea - homage to the crone. (Yes, she looks like the crone to me.) Your trick or treat pages are classic. Wonderful. Also? The hash looks delicious!

Your old Crone doesn't look like a victim ... she does look like a perpetrator though, so I am guessing she was passing out poison apples for Halloween :(
Your Trick or Treat picture are fun but the kids (anyone you know?) don't seem to be having much fun ... serious faces. So on to the pot roast ... yummy and genius way to extend your food for more meals. I havne't made a pot roast for a long time. Maybe I will give it a shot sometime soon :) Happy Halloween, Erika ...

Whatever role in the story she had she certainly doesn't look cheerful! Love dishes made with leftovers! Hugs, Chrisx

Love the pages. Your Halloween book is going to be epic when it's done. And a pretty nutritious way to extend the pot roast. Eggs are always good for us at our age. Your use of the word hankering made me smile. XOX

hm, not sure what to write in the comments as I might be a bit weird.
You made a dark page and I agree to that, as it refers to the act of killing. And taht is evil.

But DEATH, I see as liberating. I don´t see it as bad. :) I was present when both my parents died and it was a good thing. To close the eyes and wish them a good journey.
