Bewitched

Hi everyone. Happy Sunday to you.

I'm here today to join Bleubeard and Elizabeth for Second on the SecondSecond on the Second is when you get to post a second look, or put another way, repost something you've already posted.

I'm going back to October 11, 2019 with  a post that was titled Halloween is Coming.

Today I have lots of ladies and lots of purple in my second look.

I picked this 2 page spread because the new challenge at Art Journal Journey is Fairytales, Folklore and Fables. It is being hosted by the talented Elle. Halloween has a folklore of its own, and I enjoy getting a little bit spooky once a year.

Here in New England Halloween is easy to get into with the old homes (well old for the US), the trees losing their leaves and turning to bare skeleton like branches, short cold days, the old cemeteries you find everywhere (including along roads and in many people's yards sometimes)...well you get the picture. I can see why Stephen King became such a great writer of  his chosen genre growing up in rural Maine as he did.

And before I get too offtrack, one of the classic Halloween legends is witches. I know witches have quite a history, and that history is more about black magic and not wearing pointy hats and carrying brooms.   It is also not the nicest history to anyone who was accused of being a witch.

Here is a new journal page for Elle's challenge over at Art Journal Journey. I made this in a Halloween altered book that I have been working on over the last few years and that I recently pulled out. I hope to finish this book before October is over.

I painted most of my background purple, and then I added this card shaped cut out from a book. The book where I found the this image came with a deck of fortune telling cards. I'm not sure what happened to the cards, but I still have the book.

After adding this image, I stamped the flying witch. I then painted the black night clouds on the page. The children are a TH image. The owl-key image is stamped, colored and fussy cut. It's from an old set of unmounted stamps, and I don't know who made them, and the quote is from the same set.

That's all for me today. I hope October has started off well for you. Enjoy the rest of your weekend, and thanks so much for stopping by my blog.

What perfectly fun, witchy pages! Love the purples and the design is terrific! This might be one of my recent favorites, Erika! Happy weekend.

Love the witchy images. I'm always a "traditional" witch for Halloween, and I love images of the pointy hats and the black dresses and brooms.

Those pages will put you in a Halloween spirit. I hope to get some decorations out in the yard, if I don't blow away! Stay warm!

I remember when you shared this and I am SURE I commented that you had some TH paper dolls I had never seen.I thought it was amazing. It reminds me of the song "Season of the Witch" by Donovan. What a great second look you gave us on the 2nd, dear.

Your latest entry is wonderful. I really like those children and the witch flying over the moon. It's a fabulous entry for Elle's theme at Art Journal Journey.

I love your pages Erika although I must confess to not being a great fan of Halloween. I do love the fantasy of witches and spooky things and your pages are definitely that. Hugs, Chrisx

There is soooo much to see, great!
We have the Asse nearby, a tad scary indeed... - they "store low- and medium-grade radioactive waste produced by medicine and nuclear power plants."
And they don´t do it well.
I hope a witch comes and takes it to Put#n, haha!!

Loving all of your Halloween pages. I was mesmerised by the figure in the second page. What a gorgeous figure. Those two pages must have been fun to do.
The new page is fabulous too. The two girls are perfect for this setting and I love that moon with the flying witch against that purple. So many lovely things about this composition and a promise of more to come.
I love seeing all the Halloween decorations and I have my own little display too, some bought, some made. Now how soon can I put it all out?
Hugs, Neet xx

Hi Erika. First, all your purple pages are spectacular. Tactile, haunting and well-composed. And I quite agree about King having a catbird seat to all the New England history. But it did make my cringe. After reading David Hackett Fischer's Albion's Seed 20 years ago to better understand the history of my English ancestry (I have emigrating ancestors to the Virginia Colony because of the English Civil War), I then read a book by Claudia Durst Johnson called Daily Life in Colonial New England. It went into gory detail of how the nasty the Puritans were and so to this day I find any lasting remnant of their influence distasteful. The witch trials were just the tip of their iceberg! XOX
