T Stands for This and That

  Hi everyone. Happy  new week to you. And Happy T day those of you who stop by Bleubeard's and Elizabeth's blog.

   Last week I had a post written and scheduled, but then I realized I had forgotten it was T Day's 13th birthday. I wanted to do something special for T Day's 13th  so I decided to trash some of last week's post, but also save a part of it for today's post.

   Here's the part of the post that I saved and that I had originally scheduled for last week.

   One fun thing I did was meet up with a fellow blogger and her husband. Some of you may already know Dorothy and her husband Patrick. Their blog is The Frog and PeguINN. Dorothy blogs about many things, including their travels. This time they traveled from their home in Southern New Hampshire up to Lake Winnipesaukee which is in my part of the state. I had met them once before several years ago, but it was fun to meet up again for a lovely and long lunch.

  We met in Gilford, New Hampshire at another one of those old fashioned seasonal places called Sawyers.  It has been around since 1945, but this year it is under new ownership. However, out front they have these 2 cow statues so when you drive by if the cows are out you know their opening season has begun.

   Patrick is a funny guy, and he wanted to know who was going to sit on the cows. I wouldn't have climbed up on them, but luckily the restaurant had put out this sign. 😉  Ha ha.

   Here's my drink for T day this week (and it was originally also going to be for last week). You can also see lots of drinks in the background, as well as the inside of Sawyers. 

    It's always a pleasure to meet up with people  you get to know through blogging.

   Since it was almost 2 weeks ago I met up with Dorothy and Patrick, lots of other things have happened.  For one I finally went to see an orthopedic because by right shoulder has been bothering me. Stupid me tried to pull a heavy box off a shelf over my head, and when I did I could feel something pull. I'd been icing and using heat on my shoulder  plus taking something to keep down  the swelling, but sadly that didn't take care of it. Now I'm waiting to schedule some physical therapy. And trying to use my left hand more. 

  Also this past weekend we spent a day visiting with my daughter and another  day finishing up a few chores at my Mother-in-law's home. This upcoming Saturday there is going to be a family reunion there. More about that event some other time. 

   Mid-July also means blueberry season here in New Hampshire. I don't mean cultivated ones, but the tiny little native ones. They are the best. ❤ ❤❤ One of my friends and her husband have acres of land covered in these low bush blueberries. Sometimes they hired out people to come in with their big equipment to get them, but they haven't done that for a few years. This year they decided just to invite anyone over who wanted some berries. When I got the invite to go berry picking, I replied that I would be over.

   Here's a tiny snapshot of the blueberry crop in the fields. Imagine this multiplied by 100 acres. 

   You could stoop, squat or sit and spend a lot of time picking these berries. Or you could use some old fashioned equipment.  My friends have the equipment so I learned all about the traditional way to get berries, which was actually quite easy and faster than picking by hand.

   First you have these blueberry rakes which you run through the bushes kind of  like combing your hair. Only instead of hair, the tines make the berries fall off and then you tip the rake back so the berries roll down into it.

Then you just empty the berries into the berry box. Each box holds 6 quarts of berries.

It wasn't hard and in less than an hour I just about filled all 6 of my quarts.

   

   My technique isn't that great yet so I got some green berries, but definitely far more blue ones. 

    

 When we got back to my friend's house (we took their truck up into  the fields), my friend's husband pulled out this old winnower. It doesn't clean out the green berries, but the winnower cleans out the leaves and stems that gets put in the mix. 

   I even got a lesson in running the winnower.

    The berries fall down over the left edges (where my friend's husband is checking that the berries are actually going into the bin and not all over the floor) and into the boxes.   Here's my berries pre-winnower

and here they are ready to go home with me.

   As I mentioned, my raking technique isn't well practiced so I had a few green ones to clean when I got home. 😏  These berries not only freeze great, but it  means there will be some delicious baking in my future. 👍

T Stands for Motown

    Hi everyone. Happy new week to you.  I hope you had a great past weekend also. Since it's time for T  over at  Bleubeard's and Elizabeth's blog, hello to my T day blog friends. 

   Last week summer arrived with some hot and humid weather for a couple of days. Then it cooled off and we were back into early spring like weather. Then it rained. This week I think we're going to be back to normal temperatures. Maybe. The weather this year has just  been crazy and unpredictable. I'm not sure even the weather people can  forecast it very well. 😏

  I've still been working in my gardens when it's not too hot or too wet or even too cold, but I also had a fun day out last week. Some friends and I went to a play at the Ogunquit Playhouse in Ogunquit, Maine.

   For the last couple of years we've gone to one play a season, and since we've always had a good time, this year we decided to try a 3 show season pass. Doing that meant we picked out the shows, dates and times we wanted back last winter, and now it's time  to start seeing those shows.

   The  summer theater season has started, and the opening  show was one of the plays we wanted to see, so last week we saw our first show.

   The first show this year is Ain't Too  Proud To Beg. It's about the life and times of the Motown musical group The Temptations. (You probably already know their music and name.) It was excellent, and there was a lot of great music. It was also really nice to see that an afternoon matinee was sold out. Or at least I didn't see any empty seats from where I was in the theater. 

   Photos aren't allowed during the show, so here's a couple I also borrowed from the internet.

    Before the show we went to lunch. Then we each got a drink at the theater. My glass of wine is my ticket to T day this week.

   You can also see a bag of peanut M&M's  ( my dessert for the show) I bought. 

   You have to buy a glass if you don't bring one with you to the theater. Well you can't bring just any glass. Once you buy one of these theater glasses you bring it back to the next play  if you want a drink. Then you just pay for your drink and not the glass too. The last couple of times I went I had a borrowed glass, but this time I needed to buy one. (But they aren't very expensive, and a good way to get people to recycle too.)

   We'll be back next month for another show, so now I just need to remember to bring my glass with me then. 😏 Next month the play is a classic which I have never seen, not even the movie version of it. Next up is Hello Dolly.

T Stands for Last Week

      Hi everyone. Happy new week to all of you. It's also once again time for T again over at  Bleubeard's and Elizabeth's blog. It's taken me what seems like forever to write this post as I had some annoying and suspicious pop ups that wouldn't go away. I finally figured out how to get rid of them, thankfully. Sadly I must have picked them up while reading the obituary of a former student who committed suicide. It's bad enough to read an obituary of someone in their early 20's never mind having the site then mess up my computer.  😖

     Last week flew by for me. It was a busy one, but not busy with things you'd take photos of. One thing on my list was  a little self- pampering. A friend had a free pass to an exercise club so I went with her and took my first ever water aerobics class. It was fun, and I felt great to get into the water. 

     I also went and had a massage, which I haven't done in many many years. I've got a sore muscle in my lower back that comes and goes. It's better when I can get out and move, but last week with the winds and cold temperatures (in the negative numbers whether you measure by Fahrenheit or Celsius)  it was too chilly to walk. Never mind over the holidays it was easy to go into lazy mode-grin.  I decided to splurge on myself and go get the muscle knots worked on. And it did help a lot. 😀 

    Otherwise I had a couple of other appointments (nothing very exciting), worked on giving my art area a good sorting/cleaning, and I watched a lot of old episodes of Project Runway.  I also kept the woodstove going and spent some time hunkered down with a good book next to heat.

    I have 2 drink related posts this week for T day. The first is some hot cocoa I made one day along with the last of some Scottish style shortbread I had made at Christmas. 

     And my second photo is this blackberry flavored ginger ale that I discovered at my sister-in-law's house. It only comes out seasonally, so I bought a case that also has regular ginger ale as well as cranberry flavored, which is also quite good.  And it's the prettiest color too.
