California Journal

Hi everyone.  Happy Friday. I hope you've had a nice week.

Today I'm back with more of my California journal. Yes, I am getting close to finishing it. In fact I am ready to be done with it and  to move on. I didn't bring home as many bits and pieces from the latter end of the trip, so making pages actually became harder to do. Not hard in the sense of making the pages, but trying to figure out what I wanted to put on the pages to represent the trip was a challenge.

Today's  pages have to do with the drive up the Pacific Coast Highway-route 1 from Ventura to Carmel. Here's 3 photos (I've shared these before) just to refresh you memory what my pages are referring to.

One item I have repeating through the journal is circles. In my emptying of my studio closet last week, I cleaned out my little sticker shelf, and  I found a few chipboard stickers that would work well in the journal. You can see them on my page below, as well as an acetate sun I had. Sorry about the glare on the California route 1 sticker.

I put the above page next to this page.

It took me forever to make this page (above). I might have been a bit too ambitious. I was trying to catch how there is a big drop off from the road along this stretch of route 1, and how there are mountains on one side of the road, and how the road gives you some amazing views.  I didn't have a photo from the trip in front of me when I laid this out, so this is more a collage of what I remember of many views, not one actual view.

I used acrylic paint, Gelato crayons, water color paint, stabilo pencils, white ink and a regular pencil.

Drawing the drop off was tricky, as well as making the steep mountain sides have a bit of texture. It works for me though, even if it did slow me down as there were so many steps that needed to dry before I could move forward.

My pages in this next spread  is about driving along this section of the California coast.  The left page is made with lots of torn pieces of some sheets of printed paper. You'll see this technique and style again a few photos down this post, and that next page was actually made before this page. I liked it so much I decided to copy it here.

I stenciled the quote, added a few stickers as well as stamped the month.

I made the writing tag by stamping  a line image a few times on white paper and cutting all the lines out as one piece. Then I hand wrote in my story.

Below I made a pocket to hold the info page I picked up when we stopped to see the elephant seals.

To make the pocket I used a strip of kraft paper, and added a scrap of this photo paper to it. Then I doodled in some lines and added the stickers. I stamped bits of the arrows  and added the dots.

And lastly, here's my other page made with torn pieces of printed paper.  I added the acetate hummingbird (found while cleaning out the studio closet) because  I had watched an Anna's Hummingbird while walking in Carmel. Hummingbirds and flowers in November was such a treat.

I can't say my pages all flow because their similar, but since these pages are a few examples of my various styles, I am linking up to Elizabeth's "What Your Style?" challenge at Art Journal Journey.

Have a great start to your weekend!

I have driven this stretch of highway, Erika, and it is spectacular indeed. That whole area from Monterrey south holds another magical vista around every bend in the road. It was in Big Sur State Park where I was able to call in a Northern Pygmy Owl for Miriam and that impressed her more than about anything else I have ever done! A small group of Steller's Jays gathered at our picnic table when we had lunch, and one especially bold individual hopped up to see if sharing was permitted! We had been staying earlier with wonderful friends in Sacramento who have since passed away and they had Yellow-billed Magpies coming to their yard. Wonderful memories. Thanks for rekindling them! Muchos besos y abrazos desde Ontario de tu amigo David.

Travel journals are wonderful. Each day presents a different adventure and a different perspective. I think your style shows in this journal and I love it, Thanks ever so much for sharing this with us at Art Journal Journey using Bleubeard's and my theme. This brings back wonderful memories and believe it or not, some of those cliffs really remind me of your drawing and vise versa.

What beautiful photos of California Erika! Thank you very much for sharing them with us. That landscape reminds me of the Canary Islands, specifically the island of Palma, where there has been a volcanic eruption recently.
I really like the art journal pages, they are full of coluor and life, Wonderful!
I hope you have a nice weekend, enjoy it.
Big hugs, Caty

Living close to Highway 1 (albeit to the stretch further up North) I'm highly partial to this post - and just LOVE it. Even though we have done it so many times, I still enjoy driving along Highway 1. I love the stretch from Bodega Bay to Mendocino - not quite as spectacular as around Big Sur, but very beautiful and stretches that take your breath away (every time for me). Yes, the hummingbirds - we have them year round. There are several in my garden because we have feeders out for them and one or the other of the native plants that I planted is always flowering, so they get a lot of nectar. Aren't the elephant seals fantastic? And right next to the highway! Your journal is beautiful, I think you captured the "mood" of this scenic highway.

Love the pics and pages, the idea behind it!
When (not if) we can travel again... ohhh, soooo many things to keep and make some beautiful memory, too.
Sorry, you turn me into a copy cat, hope you don´t mind, but I love to learn.

So enjoyed your pages. They mean more to me (English) because i have a rough idea of the area but have not driven this coastal road you share with us. Just love your pages.
I have, however, done Anaheim to LA several times with my girl friends as cha was held there for quite a number of years. Loved it and the Italian restaurant and the sports bar (CLancy's?) near the centre where cha was held is fabulous, can recommend.
Hugs, Neet (playing catch up backwards) xx

The California coast has so many breath taking vistas, and I think you have captured some of the atmosphere. My favorite memory is of leaving one of the beaches near Bodega Bay in a fog at night, and seeing the lights or other cars in a very unexpected way.

I especially loved your Panoramic Scenic View page. I really love how you did this with your own memories, memorabilia and impressions of your journey. I know this has taken a ton of work. It's worth it.

I so agree, that torn paper technique is yours, Erika, you own it! So eye-catching and fresh-looking. Lovely photos, too. I'm glad you have finished up, I never can finish any of mine. It's hard! xoxo

Fantastic pages Erika and photos. That looked an amazing road to travel along although I think as a passenger, my eyes might have been closed for a bit of the journey.
