Owl in Flight

Hi everyone.

https://www.lovethegarden.com/uk-en/article/growing-poppies

Today we celebrate Veterans Day in the US. I don't know why my brain wants to write this Veteran's Day. Maybe because it is their day to be remembered, and I think of it in that possessive form?

Many of you may know this day as Armistice Day as this was the day World War I (also called the Great War) ended in 1918. Although the war ended in 1918, here in the US  this day wasn't known as Armistice Day until 1919, one year after the war ended. It also wasn't a US holiday until  1938, and it didn't become Veterans Day until 1954.

In my area at least, it is a day that most companies don't include in their paid holidays so they can give their employees the day after Thanksgiving off.

I'm not sure how you memorialize  or remember  the  Great War on this day in other countries, but I do know the poppy is a symbol for today. When I looked up poppy online for a photo, I kept finding pictures of a pop singer by that name. I have to admit I have never heard of her. Now I know I am officially retired  from teaching teenagers because usually I have at least heard of  most of the pop singers.
Smile.

Today I have another bird page for Wendy's challenge at Art Journal Journey. I am really enjoying this challenge, and I really like my page today too.
The background is watered down pink paint  with some rusty colored painted freehand circles. The fall leave image is a vellum sticker. The owl is stamped and fussy cut, and the circle was an ephemera bit on my work table that Chris sent to me last summer during the T Day ATC birthday swap. The quote is one of Alison Bomber's from Paper Artsy.

It is also day 11 at Leah's Art Everyday Month challenge. I will be linking up there also.

That's all for me today. Hope all is well with you!

It just depends on who is negotiating holidays. When I worked for my uncle, the guys in the warehouse belonged to the Teamsters Union. A lot of them were veterans so when they negotiated their contract, they got the Veterans Day holiday and the day after Thanksgiving. They gave up our state holiday in April, Patriots Day. Whatever bennies the Teamsters got, so did us office workers. Great bennies!

Wonderful owl page with a different color scheme. I think the pink and rust really make the owl stand out. Take care and stay dry today

A beautiful photo of the poppies and this is a day that should never be forgot. We also have a formal service on the Sunday before Remembrance Day when Poppy Wreaths are laid at memorial sites around the country.
A fabulous piece of art Erika, what a wonderful owl.

Love your beautiful page with the flying owl, gorgeous colours, too. I know poppies as the flowers for Remembrance Day in England, we all wore them, but I've never heard of a singing Poppy! Have a great day, take care, hugs, Valerie

I have a now empty poppy-seed-sachet hanging right here in honour of the ANZACS who left Gallipoli 1915.
The Germans? Start in some places carnival on this day :-(

I think if you did an internet search of Flanders Fields you would have gotten a better photo of poppies. I must officially be old, too, since I've not heard of her either.

Your journal page is so warm and inviting. I really like the own with the wingspan and the deep, rich colors of the background, too. You have created a real gem and it's a wonderful addition to Wendy's theme at Art Journal Journey.

It's a great recap of Veterans Day. I usually do more, but this year I took the easy way out. So good you shared this with those who may not know about or why we "celebrate" this date.

A beautiful post for Veterans Day, Erika!

We call it Remembrance Day in Australia. We also recognise the poppy as a symbol of the fallen which originated in World War 1. Poppies grew in abundance in Flanders Field where battles took place and, sadly, so many lives were lost. Apparently, a Canadian surgeon John McCrae wrote about it in his poem. It's a beautiful flower.

I love the colour and design of your page today. :)

I like the owl here and the colors. It's quite impressive. Yeah, you have to google poppy flower or you cat all sorts of stuff! But you found a good one!

I like your owl page a lot - it is lovely.
I visited the WWI battlefields in France, especially the ones in Verdun. It is unbelievable to see this and remember how they fought for each meter - and so many soldiers were killed. It is utterly senseless. One of the best and most impressive books I have ever read about WWI is Erich Maria Remarque"s "All Quiet on the Western Front" - still a must-read for our high school students.

I also did a post about Veterans Day, which I am sure contained information similar to past years, but tied it in with a recent visit to Stark Park in Manchester, NH. I too had never heard of a singer named Poppy so you are not alone in your ignorance on that point, Erika.

This is really beautiful, Erika. I love all the pinky orange colours, a perfect background for your owl and the full moon.
November 11th is a remembering day here, not a holiday, but because we remember and it is called Remembrance Day. It is always heart-warming and sad at the same time. At 11 o'clock many places such as stores and railway stations have a two minutes silence.

Great post, and love the poppy inspiration for this gorgeous bright color. That owl is gorgeous too!

The poppies became a symbol of the war dead in World War I, and paper poppies were part of a fundraising effort, I think.
